Scope and Content Gymnasium, Alloa Public Baths and Gymnasium, Primrose Street, Alloa, Clackmannan This view of the gymnasium of Alloa Public Baths was taken in 1898 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The building, designed in 1895-8 by the architects, Burnet & Campbell, was donated to the town by John Thomson Paton, a local mill owner. The gymnasium has an arch-braced roof and a spectators' gallery at one end. Its range of apparatus includes a vaulting horse, and trapezes and travelling rings hung from the roof. The Indian clubs at the far end offer a more gentle form of exercise. John Thomson Paton decided to give the young men of Alloa somewhere to exercise and improve their physical fitness. For a small charge they could use the facilities of the gymnasium, or take a course of lessons in fencing or gymnastics. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
