Scope and Content View from west of Nos 129-53 St Michael Street, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This four-storeyed slab block of flats was built between 1963 and 1964 by Dumfries Town Council's Architect's Department. The structure combines the traditional red sandstone of the area with concrete panels. Two large stair-towers to the east provide access to the balcony areas. This shows the block from the gardens at the rear. Garages are set into the red sandstone masonry at the base of the building. Each flat spreads over two storeys and has its own balcony which is sheltered by an overhanging roof. Two-tone harling adds interest to the façade. The red sandstone used on this building is characteristic of the Dumfries area. The stone comes from the quarries at Locharbriggs near Dumfries, and was widely used in both England and Scotland from the 19th century onwards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
