Scope and Content Meeting Hall, Royal College of Surgeons, Surgeons' Hall, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh Surgeons' Hall, designed in 1829-32 by William Henry Playfair for the Royal College of Surgeons, was altered and extended in 1908-9 by the architect, Balfour Paul, to create a new Meeting Hall. The hall was photographed c.1909 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has a magnificent coved ceiling with a glazed saucer-dome, and leafy plasterwork at the corners. A broad rectangular arch with an elaborate console opens into Paul's extension to the north (left) side of the original building. The hall was designed for general meetings of the college, or for degree-conferring ceremonies. The tall chair (right) was designed by Paul for the President of the college, and the 97 Fellows' chairs, arranged round the room, are by Whytock & Reid. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
