Scope and Content Meeting Hall, Royal College of Surgeons, Surgeons' Hall, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh Surgeons' Hall, built in 1829-32 by William Henry Playfair for the Royal College of Surgeons, was remodelled in 1908-9 by the architect, Balfour Paul, to create a new Meeting Hall. Harry Bedford Lemere was commissioned to photograph the interior c.1909. The room, with a coved ceiling and glazed saucer-dome, is lined with paintings of former presidents of the college. The chairs around the walls include 97 Fellows' chairs by Whytock & Reid, and the President's chair (centre), designed by Paul himself. Former presidents of the college include Joseph Lister (1827-1912) who initiated antiseptic surgery, and the pioneer of obstetric surgery, James Young Simpson (1811-70), who discovered of the effects of chloroform in the relief of pain in childbirth.
