Scope and Content Meeting Hall, Royal College of Surgeons, Surgeons' Hall, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh Surgeons' Hall, built in 1829-32 by William Henry Playfair for the Royal College of Surgeons, was remodelled in 1908-9 by the architect, Balfour Paul, to include a new Meeting Hall. The interior of the hall was photographed c.1909 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The room has rectangular arches with elaborate consoles opening into Paul's extensions to the north (left) and south (right) sides of the original building. The magnificent coved ceiling has a glazed saucer-dome, and leafy plasterwork at the corners. By the end of the 19th century, the Playfair building had become too small for the needs of the college as the number of surgeons had increased rapidly. The new hall was constructed for meetings of the college as well as degree-conferring ceremonies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
