Scope and Content Mount Stuart House, Isle of Bute, Argyll & Bute, from the east Mount Stuart, a magnificent 'Venetian Palace' on the east coast of the Isle of Bute, was rebuilt by the architect, Robert Rowand Anderson, after fire destroyed the original house in 1877. The east front was photographed in 1904 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This spectacular drawing-room front has splendid views across the lawn to the Firth of Clyde. It has a symmetrical arrangement of pointed-arch windows, with balconies at the centre, and an oriel corbelled out from a single buttress on each flank. The gardens, begun by the 2nd Earl of Bute in 1719, covered 300 acres by the middle of the 18th century. They came to include the Wee Garden (1823), a Kitchen Garden, redesigned in 1991, and a Victorian Pinetum of mature North American conifers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
