Scope and Content Detail of doorway to Essex Park, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway Essex Park was built c.1820, and is an elegant Classical-style villa with painted ashlar walls with contrasting quoins (prominent corner stones). The villa is two-storeyed and has three bays with a central pilastered doorway. Modern plate glass windows replaced the original 12-pane glazing in 1984. This shows the arched doorway with its pedimented surround. The wooden panelled door has a decorative band of 'nailhead' moulding above it, a traditional decorative device consisting of a row of repeating pyramids. The fanlight helps to light the hallway within. A lamp with a glass shade in the form of a flaming torch is fixed above the door. This large villa, with its elegant, Classical design would have once been the home of a wealthy 19th century family and their servants. Staff living in the house and were required to attend to the family and their guests, and to keep the house and grounds in good order. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
