Scope and Content Main Staircase, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire (latterly Seafield Hospital for Sick Children) Seafield, an imposing Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow firm of architects, Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the gallery of the main staircase was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The staircase, reached through a pair of heavy brocade curtains (bottom, centre) from the inner hall, rises to a first-floor gallery. It has elaborately turned balusters and newel posts, and a stair carpet held in place by wooden stair rods and clips, leaving a portion of the wooden tread exposed on either side. A narrow strip of carpet or 'runner' was commonly used to line the middle of the staircase, and was secured by brass or sometimes wooden rods. The carpet was moved up or down a few centimetres at the annual spring cleaning so that wear and tear was evenly distributed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
