Scope and Content Business Room, Seafield, Doonfoot Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire (latterly Seafield Hospital for Sick Children) Seafield, an imposing Italianate villa designed in 1888-9 by Robert A Bryden of the Glasgow firm of architects, Clarke & Bell, was built for the engineer, Sir William Arrol. This photograph of the business room of the house was taken in 1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This octagonal shaped room has a panelled dado with a castellated pattern, and an ornately carved fireplace surround and elaborate mirrored overmantel. The table, also octagonal, has a matching set of leather-covered chairs. Sir William Arrol (1839-1913), one of the great Victorian contracting engineers, diversified into structural steelwork and particularly bridge construction, building the Forth Rail Bridge (1890) and Tower Bridge, London (1887). He also built the Bankside Power Station in London, now the Tate Modern Art Gallery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
