Scope and Content Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire Fyvie Castle, a medieval royal fortress, was remodelled between 1770 and 1840 by General William Gordon who created a new entrance vestibule. This photograph of the entrance was taken in 1905 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The approach to the castle is by a carriageway which sweeps into the angle of the south wing (left), adorned with carved dormers, corbelled turrets and a late Victorian heraldic frontispiece, and the west wing with its single-storeyed entrance vestibule. In 1596 Fyvie was sold to Alexander Seton, Earl of Dunfermline, who was responsible for much of the elaborate exterior decoration. He also built a staircase, one of the most impressive in Scotland, leading to the main apartments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
