Scope and Content Detail of the Entrance Hall, City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow The City Chambers were designed by the architect, William Young, in a lavish style, reflecting the city's wealth and importance at the end of the 19th century. This photograph of the entrance hall was taken c.1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This massive pedimented stone doorcase is flanked by two huge carved figures representing the Arts and Virtues. The hall is lit by a pendant bronze lantern, and the marble mosaic floor has a surround decorated with Greek key pattern. The design was the result of two competitions won by Young, a Paisley-born architect with a London practice, whose grandiose scheme exactly fitted the brief. Building began in 1883, and Queen Victoria opened the Chambers in 1888. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
