Scope and Content Council Chamber Staircase, City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow The City Chambers, Glasgow, were designed by the architect, William Young, as the headquarters of the city council. This photograph of the principal council chamber staircase was taken c.1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This magnificent staircase, simple in plan but decorated in a grand Baroque style, leads to the council chamber on the second floor. It has alabaster-panelled walls, a breccia marble dado and balustrade, and tiers of arcading on square piers. Glasgow's municipal chambers were designed on a grand and lavish scale, reflecting the wealth and importance of the city at the end of the 19th century. The total cost of the building, including furnishings, was £578,232. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
