Scope and Content Gosford House, Aberlady, East Lothian, from the south Gosford House, a palatial mansion originally designed in 1790 by Robert Adam for the Earl of Wemyss, was extensively remodelled in 1891 by William Young. The house was photographed in 1893 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This magnificent pilastered and elaborately decorated entrance front is lit by huge Venetian windows. From each end block, gateways lead to the gardens, and the sweeping carriage-drive is bordered by a balustrade and guarded by a pair of snarling lions. The house was completed to Robert Adam's design in 1800, but suffered from damp due to the use of sea sand in the mortar. The 9th Earl of Wemyss was dissuaded from demolishing it by his son who commissioned William Young to remodel the house in the 1890s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
