Scope and Content Gosford House, Aberlady, East Lothian, from the south-west Gosford House, built in 1790 by Robert Adam for the Earl of Wemyss, was altered and extended by the architect, William Young, who completed the work in 1891. This photograph was taken by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, during the reconstruction. This view shows the rebuilding of the main south entrance front (right). The west front, lit by three huge Venetian windows, has four wide-branching staircases descending from a terrace to a rough lawn pegged out for transformation into an Italian garden. The house, originally built for the 7th Earl, suffered from damp due to the use of sea sand in the mortar. The 9th Earl was dissuaded from demolishing the remaining Adam shell by his son who commissioned William Young to remodel the house in 1891. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
