Scope and Content Dining Hall, Duntreath Castle, Strathblane, Stirling This picture of the magnificent dining hall of Duntreath Castle was taken by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, when he was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1898. The castle was reconstructed in 1890 for its owner, Sir Archibald Edmonstone. The dining hall has a timber vaulted roof and panelled walls. The room is furnished in the Baronial style of the 17th century with elaborately carved high-backed chairs and oak chests around the walls, and lit by 'electroliers' with candle-shaped bulbs. In the 1890s the dining rooms of grand houses were generally 'heavy' rooms, often panelled in oak, and hung with gilt-framed oil paintings and family portraits. The 'electroliers', a new technology of the time, mimic the chandeliers of the candlelit era. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
