Scope and Content Duntreath Castle, Strathblane, Stirling, from the south-east Duntreath Castle, home of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, lies in a wooded valley at the foot of the Campsie Fells. It was reconstructed in 1890 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, and photographed in 1898 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The castle, redesigned by Mitchell as a Franco-Scottish palace, is surrounded by parkland. The south front (left), bordered by formal gardens, has an impressive tower at the south-east corner which contained the state bedroom suite and the guest rooms. In the 1890s the Prince of Wales was a frequent visitor to Duntreath in the company of his friend, Mrs Keppel, sister of Sir Archibald Edmonstone. The south-east tower was designed to accommodate the prince and his 16-strong retinue. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
