Scope and Content Banqueting Hall Staircase, the City Chambers, No 80 George Square, Glasgow The Glasgow City Chambers, designed by William Young as the headquarters of the City Council, were formally opened by Queen Victoria in 1888. This photograph of the banqueting hall staircase was taken in c.1890 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This magnificent staircase has alabaster-panelled walls, and a dado and balustrade in purple breccia, black Irish and strongly-veined red Numidian marbles. The arcading is on single and coupled columns, and the ceilings are vaulted and richly plastered. The City Chambers were designed to a grandiose plan, and constructed on a lavish scale, reflecting the city's wealth and importance at the end of the 19th century. The total cost of the building, including furnishings, was £578,232. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
