Scope and Content McEwan Hall, Teviot Place, Edinburgh, from the east McEwan Hall, designed by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, for Edinburgh University, was completed in 1897. This photograph of the principal elevation was taken by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hall, designed in an Early Italian Renaissance style, has a shallow dome-shaped steel roof topped by an ornamental lantern. The walls, divided horizontally into three distinct sections, are surrounded by projecting buttresses with niches for statues. The hall, donated to the University of Edinburgh by William McEwan, MP for the Central Division of Edinburgh, was the main large hall in Edinburgh. It was also used by the city for concerts and functions before the building of the Usher Hall in 1914. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
