Scope and Content Detail of a painted panel in the centre of the drawing room fireplace, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1800. It was transformed 1905-10 by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914) by the addition of a ballroom and service block. The house has distinctive twin towers flanking the doorway, and is harled and painted. This painting is set in an ornate c.1820 fireplace in the drawing room. It depicts a maiden tying a ribbon in her hair with a lion and donkey by her side. Her Classical dress reflects the Neo-Classical details of the fireplace with its swags and columns. This scene may show a personification of Africa, as one of the four continents, a popular decorative device. Alternatively it may be the figure of Vanity, being reminded of a more virtuous life by the noble lion with the foolish donkey behind her. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
