Scope and Content View of ballroom from south, Achnagairn house, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1800, with major additions and alterations being carried out 1905-10 by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914). He transformed the old U-plan house into a square of buildings with a central courtyard. This shows the ballroom, built in 1912 to celebrate a 21st birthday in the owner's family. The hammerbeam roof has carved details, as does the cornice. A balustraded gallery runs around the room. The walls, fireplace and arched windows are of stone. This impressive room would be used for entertaining on a grand scale. Musicians would play from the gallery, whilst guests danced below under the brass chandeliers. The elaborate fireplace helped heat the room, whilst providing a focal point to the room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
