Scope and Content Detail of fireplace, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1800, and altered 1905-10 by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914) to include a ballroom and service wing. The house has white harled walls, twin towers, and forms a square with a central court. This shows a fireplace of brick with a wooden surround. This has been built to incorporate a glazed display cabinet above the fire. The design of this feature is contemporary with the alterations of 1905-10, and shows the Arts and Crafts style. Fireplaces were the focal point of rooms before the widespread use of central heating. They were richly decorated in wealthier homes and used for the display of ornaments and even specially made cloth hangings to decorate the mantelpiece. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
