Scope and Content View from south of entrance lobby, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1880. Architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (died 1914) carried out extensive additions and alterations 1905-10, including the addition of a new ballroom and service wing, and decorative schemes in the Arts and Crafts style. This photograph shows the entrance lobby, a semicircular room with panelling halfway up each wall, and a beamed ceiling. The door has elegant glazed doors, which echo the window's Gothic design. The curving brass door handles are Art Nouveau in style. This lobby leads into a huge staircase hall, with a fireplace at each end where guests could relax and remove their coats before going into the public rooms. The richness of the wood panelling creates an atmosphere of warmth and luxury. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
