Scope and Content View of staircase hall, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1800. Between 1905 and 1910 it was remodelled and extended to create a new ballroom and service wing in Arts and Crafts style by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914). This shows the vast hallway which leads to the staircase. The room is dominated by a large inglenook fireplace, which would once have been surrounded by comfortable chairs. The walls are covered in panelling, and the ceiling features prominent beams. This huge room would have been the area where guests were received before being shown to the public rooms. Large houses like this were designed to accommodate many guests as well as the owner, their family, and a full staff of servants. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
