Scope and Content Detail of the ballroom fireplace, Achnagairn House, Kirkhill, Inverness Achnagairn House was built c.1880, and was originally U-shaped in plan. Additions in 1905-10 included a ballroom and service wing which created a central courtyard. These Arts and Crafts additions were by architect William Laidlaw Carruthers (d.1914). This shows the stone fireplace which is the focal point in the hammerbeam-roofed ballroom. Family coats of arms, monograms and the date of 1912 appear in the finely carved stonework, above the wide arch below. This huge room with its high ceiling could not have been kept warm by this fireplace alone. Radiators line the walls to provide additional heat. This ballroom was built to celebrate a 21st birthday in the owner's family in 1912. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
