Scope and Content View from south-east of Rio House, No 14 Dundee Road, Perth Rio House was built in 1860 to designs by architect David Smart (1824-1914). It is a large, two-storeyed Italianate villa with a three-stage entrance tower. The house is built of rubble with worked stones dressings. The house has a modern extension. This shows the side of the house with its conservatory. The bay behind it has bracketed eaves, an arched window, and worked stone dressings which contrast with the rubble walls. The flowerbeds have 19th-century terracotta edging tiles. Today, people do not live on such a grand scale as the Victorians, whose houses were maintained by a staff of servants. Many old, large houses are converted to new uses, and Rio House is now Abbeyfield Society sheltered accommodation for older people. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
