Scope and Content Detail of sundial in south wall of Brahan House, Perth Brahan House was built in 1898 as the home of Rufus Pullar, whose family owned the North British Dye Works, then Perth's biggest employer. This large Arts and Crafts house was designed by Yorkshire architects Bedford & Kitson, and was demolished c.1969. This shows a carved stone sundial set into the wall of the house. It includes the initials of the owner and his wife, the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, holly and mistletoe, sun and moon, an hourglass, and the motto: 'I COUNT THE SUNNY HOURS'. Sundials often feature on the walls of traditional Scottish buildings, or as garden features. The use of a couple's initials on this example is similar to marriage lintels placed above doorways, where mottos and datestones can also be found. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
