Scope and Content View of stable block, Brahan House, Perth Brahan House was built for Rufus Pullar, of the family which owned Pullar's North British Dye Works and dry-cleaning factories. The fine Arts and Crafts house was built in 1898 by Yorkshire architects Bedford & Kitson, and was demolished c.1969. This shows the stable block belonging to the house. This would probably have had open access along one side, which has been blocked off at a later date. A clock can be seen in the central gable, and dovecots are visible under the flanking roofs. Stable blocks and offices were a necessary part of the large Edwardian home. Horses were needed for recreation and also for transport, pulling carriages in the days before the motorcar. They often included workshops and residential areas for servants. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
