Scope and Content Detail of entrance porch and loggia, Brahan House, Perth This fine Arts and Crafts house was built for Rufus Pullar and his wife in 1898 by Leeds-based architects Bedford & Kitson. The house had harled walls and half-timbered detailing on the gables, with a varying roofline. It was demolished c.1969. This shows the beautifully carved porch with Latin inscription 'PERSERVERANTIA ET INDUSTRIA' (Perseverance and industry), carved birds above the door, and half-timbered construction, filled in with laths and harling, visible in the broken section (left). The Pullar family had a textile works in Perth as early as 1819, and later branched out into dry cleaning from 1851. Pullar's North British Dye Works helped supply the enormous demand for mourning wear after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
