Scope and Content View of billiard room inglenook fireplace, Brahan House, Perth Brahan House was built for Rufus Pullar, whose family owned the dyeing and dry-cleaning works which was Perth's biggest employer. The house was built in 1898, by Leeds-based architects Bedford & Kitson. It was demolished c.1969. This shows the naturalistically carved fireplace in the billiard room, with its design of owls and bats in a tangle of branches and roots. The owl motif is repeated in the William De Morgan style relief tiles inside the arch of the inglenook. Fine fireplaces were often a feature of grand Edwardian houses, providing a focus for the room, and suggesting ideals of hearth and home. They were often enriched with decoration in carved wood and stone, in fashionable Arts and Crafts designs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
