Scope and Content View from south-west of Gothic House, No 24 York Road, Edinburgh Gothic House was built c.1820, and was first owned by Mr Alexander Scott, a lawyer. It was built on land belonging to Trinity Mains Farm. The fanciful exterior of this villa is matched by elaborate interior plasterwork, stained glass and woodwork. This photograph shows the house with its smooth ashlar frontage and decorative pinnacles. An arched entrance porch is topped by crenellations, as are the flanking windows. The window frames form Tudor arches with wooden mullions. This house would have been very fashionable at the time of its construction, when romantic Gothic designs were in vogue. The style, known as Gothic Revival, draws upon Medieval ecclesiastical architecture for its design details. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
