Scope and Content View of south-east entrance hall, No 6 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh Regent Terrace was built in 1826 to designs by architect William Henry Playfair (1790-1857). It is a row of terraced houses with Greek Doric columns forming porches and long cast-iron balconies. The blocks of houses are arranged to form 'pavilions'. This photograph shows the hall with its red, gold and black painted wall panels and black marble columns with painted Corinthian capitals. An Art Deco 'shell' lamp hangs from the coved ceiling, and a stained glass panel is fitted above the columns. This decorative scheme was probably completed c.1830, shortly after the houses were built. The red and black panels refer back to Ancient Roman designs, particularly those found at Pompeii. Copies of these murals were very fashionable at this time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
