Scope and Content Detail of the painted ceiling in the annex of No 23 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh Regent Terrace was designed by architect William Henry Playfair (1790-1857) and built in 1826. It forms a row of pavilion blocks, each house having Greek Doric columns highlighting its doorway. Long cast-iron balconies run below the first-floor windows. This shows part of a painted ceiling in the annex. Painted arches are filled with foliage, a shield with a deer design, a red squirrel and a rabbit. The style is naturalistic, but slightly naïve, and was probably painted in c.1880. This annex was probably a linking corridor, as it had stained glass panels to light its sides. It probably led to a now vanished billiard room or conservatory. It would have seemed much more realistic when its colours were fresh and new. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
