Scope and Content View of fireplace in north room on first floor of No 3 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh This ornate fireplace is situated in the house once owned by John Ritchie Findlay, proprietor of 'The Scotsman' newspaper. The house was built in 1876, and reconstructed in 1883 to designs by architect Arthur George Sydney Mitchell (1856-1930). This photograph shows a variegated marble and alabaster fireplace with wood panelling on the walls around it. The stone has been intricately carved into heavy consoles, and inserts of darker stones added for contrast. The inside of the fireplace is tiled. The fireplace would be the focus of the decorative scheme in most rooms, at a time when it was the only source of heat. Great expense was lavished on this example, one of many in this wealthy Victorian home. It expresses the wealth and taste of its owner. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
