Detail of entrance of No.3 Rothesay Terrace

SC 689482

Description Detail of entrance of No.3 Rothesay Terrace

Catalogue Number SC 689482

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of C 43401 CN

Scope and Content Detail of entrance to No 3 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh This grand entrance leads into the townhouse which once belonged to John Ritchie Findlay, proprietor of 'The Scotsman' newspaper. It was built in 1876, and reconstructed in 1883 to designs by architect Arthur George Sydney Mitchell (1856-1930). This shows the wooden porch reached by stone steps over the basement area which is protected by cast iron railings. The porch is finely carved in Early Renaissance style. A deep pediment is supported on consoles over the arched doorway. This carved wooden porch with stained glass panels in the sides reflects the luxurious wood-panelled interiors within the house. These include a cedar-panelled library, an oak-panelled dining room and a mahogany-panelled morning room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
