Scope and Content Detail of ceiling in north room on first floor, No 3 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh No 3 Rothesay Terrace was designed by the architect Arthur George Sydney Mitchell (1856-1930). It was built in 1876, and reconstructed in 1883. This elegant building was the home of John Ritchie Findlay, the proprietor of 'The Scotsman' newspaper. This shows a panel from a decorated ceiling. The wooden frame borders a design of painted plasterwork. Many areas have been enhanced by gilding and the garlands are hand painted. The colour scheme is in tones of blue-green on a buff background. This panel is one of many in this room. The others illustrate the 12 'Labours of the months' and the signs of the zodiac, along with emblems of the sun and moon. The plasterwork would be cast in moulds then applied to form decorative surrounds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
