Scope and Content General view of Nos 48 and 50 Wester Hailes Park, Wester Hailes, Edinburgh Nos 48 and 50 Wester Hailes Park were approved for construction in 1970. They formed part of a group of seven nine-storeyed slab blocks in the huge Wester Hailes development. They contained 516 flats in total and were demolished c.1994. This photograph shows the two blocks with their brickwork exposed due to flaking coloured harling. Ventilation bricks are used on the staircase areas. The entrances on the second block are indicated by concrete porches. Some areas of relatively modern housing are demolished when it is decided that the buildings are uneconomic to renovate. Sometimes an area's social problems are made worse by the specific type of housing found there, and new developments are constructed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
