Scope and Content Oblique aerial view of Westfield Flats, Westfield Road, Gorgie, Edinburgh The long, curving wall of the Westfield flats was approved for construction in 1949. It consists of one eight-storeyed slab block containing 88 flats in total. The north section was added in 1963 by the contractors, Hepburn Brothers. This aerial view shows the huge curving wall of flats with offices, housing and commercial properties surrounding them. Long balconies are visible on the inner curve of the flats. The blocks on the roof hold the lift machinery. The Westfield flats had a nursery school for children aged 2-5 within the building. This had a rooftop playground, and provided places for 80 children. The flats were built near the site of Gorgie Manor House, where the cinema stands in this view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
