Scope and Content Poldrate Mill, Haddington, East Lothian This was a large water-powered meal mill, on a medieval site. The present mill buildings date at least in part from a rebuilding in 1842. The main mill building is a three-storeyed structure, and was driven by a mid-breast paddle wheel. At right angles to this is a very large granary, with gangways linking it to the mill. This shows the granary in the centre, with its central hoist and gangway to the mill, part of which is on the left, the kiln for drying oats, with its ventilator. The granary is much larger than usual even for a large mill. Poldrate Mill was converted into a community centre from 1968 by the Lamp of the Lothian Trust, with little loss of character, though the chimney seen here has gone. The wheel-house front and roof were removed to reveal the wheel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
