Scope and Content Bascule Bridge, Firhill Road, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This was a typical Forth & Clyde Canal double-bascule bridge which carried Firhill Road across the Glasgow Branch of the canal, completed from Maryhill (Stockingfield Junction) to Hamiltonhill in 1777. As the early bridges on the canal were of the single bascule type, this was probably a replacement. This shows the bridge from the south-east. The railings on the left have been removed, leaving their cast iron bases. To the right of the bridge abutment is a stop gate, which could be swung across the canal when it was necessary to drain the section of canal to the west. The Forth & Clyde Canal was closed at the end of 1962, and this bridge was replaced by a culvert in about 1969, so that heavier traffic could cross the canal at this point. In 1993 the culvert was replaced by a fixed bridge, with navigable headroom, and in 2001 the canal was reopened throughout. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
