Scope and Content Botanic Gardens Station, No 1057 Great Western Road, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway, a line promoted by the Caledonian Railway to link existing lines in the east with the West End and Maryhill, and via the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway with the industries of the north bank of the River Clyde and the Vale of Leven. This shows the street-level building of the station from the south-west. It was designed by James Miller, a noted railway architect, and was a precursor of his buildings for the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901. Stairs led from this building to the platforms in cutting below. The station closed in about 1939. This building was badly damaged by a fire in 1970, and had to be demolished. The stations on the Glasgow Central Railway were all designed for display, and this was the most spectacular. Its loss was particularly sad because it was a focal point in Great Western Road, said to be Glasgow's finest street. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
