Scope and Content Atlas Works, Barcaple Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1884 by The Clyde Locomotive Co Ltd, and was taken over in 1888 by Sharp, Stewart & Co Ltd of Manchester. That firm became part of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd in 1903, who made large additions before and during World War I. This shows a large addition made just before World War I, probably to designs by the Glasgow Steel Roofing Co Ltd. Its two bays became known as the Marne shops during World War I, when they were used for making shell cases for the Western Front. In the mid-1950s the North British Locomotive Co Ltd, which had been Europe's largest manufacturer of steam locomotives, turned to making diesel locomotives, and concentrated their manufacture at their Queen's Park Works, running down this works. The company failed in 1963, and this works was demolished in 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
