Scope and Content Kelvinside Station, No 1051 Great Western Road, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway, which was promoted by the Caledonian Railway to link its Lanarkshire lines with the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway, giving access to the north bank of the River Clyde, but also providing a suburban service to the north-west of Glasgow. This shows the street-level building from the north-east. This contained the usual offices on the ground floor, and staff housing on the upper floor. Covered stairways at the rear led to two platforms in cutting. The station closed in 1942, and the line through it in 1964, but the house was still lived in in 1968. This building was eventually converted into a pub restaurant, which was very badly damaged by fire in the early 1990s. After lying derelict for several years it was repaired, and again serves as a pub restaurant. It was designed by J J Burnet in his best Beaux Arts style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
