Scope and Content General Terminus Quay, Glasgow This ore terminal was opened in 1957 to handle imports of iron ore for both Clyde Iron Works and Ravenscraig Steel Works. Bulk carriers brought in ore which was discharged by three cranes on to a conveyor system which ultimately loaded the ore into hopper wagons for onward transport. This shows the bulk carrier 'Livanita' being manoeuvred out of her berth at the quay, having discharged her cargo. The tugs were part of the Steel & Bennie fleet, and would steady the vessel until she reached the estuary at Greenock. This ore terminal closed in 1978, when a new deep-water one, capable of accommodating much larger vessels, was opened at Hunterston. The General Terminus terminal was then scrapped, and its site used for the Glasgow Garden Festival of 1988. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
