Scope and Content Prince's Dock, Glasgow This dock was built between 1893-7 for the Clyde Navigation Trust, and was originally known as Cessnock Dock. It was opened in 1895 by the Prince of Wales, hence the name. It had three basins, and a large entrance basin. It was designed to accommodate larger vessels than the earlier Queen's Dock. This shows the east end of the south basin, with a small cargo vessel. The two-storeyed transit sheds are typical of Prince's Dock. The machine on the quay is a combined elevator, bagging and weighing machine used to deal with loose cargoes. By the late 1960s the general cargo vessels for which this dock had been designed were being supplanted by container ships and bulk carriers too large to enter the dock. The dock closed in the 1970s and has been filled in. The site was used for the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
