Scope and Content Govan Tram Depot, Nos 29-35 Brand Street, Glasgow This large modern depot was built in 1913-14 for Glasgow Corporation Tramways Department to designs by J Ferguson, engineer. It has a large red sandstone-faced block of offices and staff accommodation in Harvie Street, and car sheds parallel to Brand Street, with a terracotta brick frontage. This shows the depot from the south-east, with part of the administrative block on the left, and the car sheds to the right. The depot had closed before the tram network finally shut down in 1962, and it was being used as a bus garage in 1968. The electrification of Glasgow's tramways in 1901-2 was a great success, and was followed by the extension of the system to cover a much larger area. Routes were opened to Paisley and Renfrew, and this depot was probably built to accommodate cars on these and other, more local routes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
