Scope and Content Govan Graving Docks, No 18 Clydebrae Street, Glasgow These three graving, or dry, docks were built for the Clyde Navigation Trust to allow ships built in Clyde yards, or using the Glasgow Harbour, to be docked for examination or repair. Each was in turn capable of accommodating the largest vessels afloat. This shows the docks as seen from the south side of Govan Road, after the demolition of some tenements. The docks are below road level, so that only the upper part of ships in dock can be seen. This Blue Funnel Line ship seen here is in No 3 Dock, completed in 1898. These docks were used for inspection and repair until about 1987, when the docks were purchased to provide overflow parking for the Glasgow Garden Festival of 1988. Since the festival ended the docks have been disused and decaying. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
