Scope and Content Govan Press Buildings, Nos 577-81 Govan Road, Glasgow This building was constructed in 1888-9 for John Cossar, printer and publisher, to designs by Frank Stirrat, architect. Cossar had previously occupied premises known as Portland Buildings in Govan Road. This shows the building from the north-east. Above the first-floor windows are panels containing portrait busts of Gutenberg, Scott, Burns, & Caxton. Behind this frontage are two-storeyed printing workshops. In 1966 Cossars were still operating from these premises. The parish of Govan covered a large area on both sides of the River Clyde. The village of Govan grew up round the parish church, and was small until the development of shipbuilding from the 1840s. Its subsequent growth created a demand for specialist services like this printing works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
