Scope and Content Prince's Dock, Glasgow This dock, originally known as Cessnock Dock, was built for the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1893-7. It had three basins, approached from the River Clyde via an entrance basin large enough for vessels to cant, or turn, and hence known as the canting basin. This shows the roadway along the pier between the south and middle basins, looking west, lined on both sides with the two-storeyed transit sheds typical of this dock. On the right is a portable office which could be moved in place for a clerk to record the loading or unloading of a vessel. The dock, though incomplete, was opened in 1895 by the Prince of Wales, and was thereafter known as Prince's Dock. It declined in use throughout the 1970s, and was eventually closed and infilled. It was the site of the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival. It is still being redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
