Scope and Content Barrowfield Weaving Factory, Nos 103-11 French Street, Glasgow This factory was founded in 1889 by John Brown & Son, power-loom muslin manufacturers. Additions continued to be made until 1899. The architect for all the buildings was Miles Septimus Gibson. The firm specialised in weaving patterned muslins. This shows the French Street frontage of the works from the south-west. The two-storeyed block on the left has polychrome tiled decoration, and was built in 1891. The three-storeyed block in the centre, faced with terracotta brick, was constructed in 1899. The years of construction of the rest are unknown. In 1966 the factory was occupied by Neil Meiklejohn & Co Ltd, shirt and general manufacturers. By that time the once very extensive power-loom weaving industry of Bridgeton and Dalmarnock was almost extinct. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
