Scope and Content Victoria Bridge, Glasgow The first bridge on this site was Glasgow's medieval bridge, widened in 1774-8 and, in 1821, by Thomas Telford. It was, however, totally inadequate by the 1840s, and this one was built in 1851-4 to designs by James Walker, engineer, London. This shows the replacement bridge from the south-west, showing its graceful lines. It is constructed of sandstone, faced with dark-grey granite from Kingston (Dun Laoghaire) in Ireland. Note the slenderness of its piers. This is now the oldest bridge over the River Clyde in Glasgow, and still carries main road traffic, though much of the pressure has been taken from the older Clyde bridges by the construction of the Kingston Bridge on the M8, opened in 1970.
